Hereditary Defects Advice - Progressive Retinal Atrophy (P.R.A.)

There are two types of P.R.A. generalised (GPRA) and centralised (CPRA). The former (often referred to as "night blindness") has not yet been recorded in our breed. Since "night blindness" can be caused by a number of other factors than hereditary P.R.A. all incidences should be investigated by such experts as Dr Keith Barnett or Dr Peter Bedford.

CPRA is known to affect the breed. The mechanism of inheritence remains unknown. CPRA can be recorded between 18 months and 9 years of age, it is strongly recommended that all breeeding stock should be tested by a vet on the B.V.A. eye testing panel at least once a year. Parents of affected offspring should also be tested. Results and pedigree should be submitted to the Club Secretary. Do not breed from affected stock and abide by the recommendations of the eye specialists.
